Fairfax Small Bathroom Shower Remodeling
In this picture of our most recent bathroom tile remodeling project Evan Daniels is doing the final tile wipe down on a small Schluter mud set shower pan with Granite Luna Pearl sills and seat. Tile is Daltile Navelli Carrera Star NV01 10x13 field on walls with Daltile Sonterra SR87 1" glass tiles in a roped border. Shower pan is a 2" octagon with 1" mosaic pattern. Special order shower door will be installed soon.

Burke Luxury Small Bathroom Remodeling
Notice all diagonal tile cuts are full halves. The bathroom remodeling picture above consists of a 20" deep 32"x60" Jacuzzi Cetra tub / shower combination. Picture framed tile design is Daltile Salerno 81 Nubi Bianche 6x6 on diagonal with glass tile accents and glass band SL86 Smoky Topaz.
Shower valve and shower head is the nicest finish I've seen on a plumbing valve. The bathroom valves are the Kohler "Finial Tradition" series in a Vibrant Brushed Bronze finish. Nice warm coppery tone and beautiful shape.

Above are pictures of my design of a small 5 ft x 8 ft bathroom remodeled into a shower only bathroom with seating, recessed can lighting, window (option), Kohler clear frameless shower door, large hidden shampoo shelf, diagonal ceramic tile floor, under floor heating, ADA toilet elongated, granite tile inserts in accent strip and dual shower heads, including handheld (cleaning) above seat. The bathroom remodeling trend is "one tub in a home is sufficient", as most people take showers. This shower design is somewhat of a cross between a tub and a shower as a person can sit and rest to bathe or shave their legs. Grab bars could easily be added for handicapped or elderly people.

Tile, Granite, Marble Choices
Toilets are a glazed or fired surface that is a glass type surface, non porous, easy to clean (no abrasives) and sanitary. Most ceramic and porcelain tiles have a fired surface that can be very smooth and non porous depending on the substrate texture before glazing. Some floor tiles are made with traction in mind, hence are rough before firing and may be hard to keep clean on shower walls. Some wall tiles are high gloss and smooth for easy cleaning (like a toilet surface). Generally the dirt in a shower that attaches to floor and walls is pale beige in color. Black or dark tile with a rough texture would not be a good choice for color.
Granite and marble are both porous natural materials. Granite is substantially harder than marble and also impervious to acids or household cleaning chemicals. Marble on the other hand is very soft, scratches easily and can be easily damaged with acids or household chemicals. Slate would be hard to keep clean in a shower.
Pictured above is brown onyx tile with a 2 minute lemon juice and vinegar test. Notice the lemon juice area in the center with finish sheen removed and now dull. The vinegar is less strong (above).The scratches were done with my car keys. Home improvement stores don't sell readymade vanity tops made of marble, only granite or synthetic materials.
Tub choices
Bathroom tubs normally range from 5 ft to 6 ft long and 30" to 42" wide. There are also units smaller, bigger and in varying shapes. A Standard tub is 5 ft x 30". Tubs are made of steel (thin inexpensive), caste iron (heavy, not big or deep) and fiberglass ( most common today). I generally install Aker, Jacuzzi or Kohler fiberglass tubs. Once in a while a Kohler Villager caste iron. Aker is not a name brand but has good quality and price. If you have the room for a 5'6" or 6' tub, go for it. I like a tub less then 36" wide as it takes less time and water to fill. If it all possible sit in the tub you are considering buying. Other wise its like buying a car without driving it. I like a gently sloped rather than steep back.

Off the shelf granite top with under mount sink. Great looks and value($250single-$550 double bowl). I don't recommend marble for your bathroom or kitchen. It tends to be too soft and marks easily. Pay attention to holes cut in top for faucet, either 4" centers or "wide spread", different faucets to buy. May need side splash(s), sold separate. Home Depot Granite tops.
Bath or lavatory faucets come in at various price levels. I like Moen products or the other major brands. Try to stay away from inexpensive bathroom faucets as they tend not to last. Lowe's Bath Faucets and Home Depot Bath Faucets. Dark finishes water spot easily, brushed nickel or pewter is current trend.
The same goes for bathroom shower or tub valves as stated above. Moen shower valves Brushed or Chrome. Roman tub fillers fill tubs much faster as they are ported bigger. Moen Roman Tub fillers Brushed or Chrome. Your water line size and pressure to your bathroom enters into fill rates. It takes a long time to fill a large bath tub with a standard tub valve. Kraftmaid Bathroom Vanities and bath cabinet sizes. Vanity counter height used to be 30" high but now cabinets with tops tend to be around 34" in height. This is easier on a person's back. I recommend bathroom vanity cabinets with wood sides vs particle board sides as the high humidity in the bath tends to cause the particle board to expand and "blow up". In your "standard 5x8 bath" go with a 30"W x 33 1/2"H x 21"D vanity with drawers to the side away from the bathroom door. Home Depot Vanities and Lowe's Vanities. Strasser woodworks.
Picture of a shoulder height window in your shower area. Or maybe skylight over the shower. Seeing outside is a great return on investment.
Seat in the bathroom shower area with extra shower valve and hand held spray. You have less of a tendency to fall over washing your feet. Women for shaving. Hand held to rinse and clean shower. Of safety value to the elderly for bathing. Don't have to get all the way down or up out of a tub and can sit at chair height to take a shower.

Many quality bathroom remodeling supplies must be ordered and are not stocked by local suppliers. They may include the tub, toilet, vanity, shower valves, faucets, shower door or ceramic tile. Lead time is needed as well as planning to make sure the item will work for the intended application. Will it be what you want and will it fit. These things need to be gone over with your bathroom remodeling contractor before you order the item.
